Business domain oriented approach

In Revelo, the story begins with organizations describing their domain visually using Revelo's intelligent concept modeling tools. This approach enables them to:

  • Describe the concepts and relationships inherent in their domain and makes Revelo's underlying GIS technology (ArcGIS or Open source) aware of the realities of the business domain
  • Create the big picture of their business domain and
  • Evaluate their exact data needs based on this big picture and business rules embedded therein.

Revelo, therefore, helps customers avoid the pitfalls of haphazard implements of expensive and complex GIS technology.

Understanding the Data Landscape

The business domain oriented approach and the clear view of exact data needs that follows helps organizations take a bird-eye view of what data they have and what gaps remain in those data.

Acquiring missing Data

The conceptual model of the business domain helps enforce business rules automatically when acquiring data from the field via field staff or other sources such as sensors and data partners, thus ensuring control over integrity of incoming data.

For ex: when the field worker logs in into the Revelo mobile app, it uses its knowledge of the conceptual model and

  • Changes its user interface to suit the conceptual model.
  • Provides a primary safety net that ensures that appropriate spatial and other constraints are applied when data is being collected via maps and forms, and
  • Prevents him from making mistakes during data entry that would prove costly during subsequent data processing and analytics stages.

The Revelo mobile application provides user friendly map and form based user experiences to collect data in the field. In case there is no Internet connection, field workers can continue collecting data in offline mode for days or weeks, depending upon their phone/tablet storage space, and sync up with the Server when connection becomes available.

The app also provides geofencing capability which ensures that data is always collected within assigned geographical areas. This helps prevent data duplication and fraud and ensures that the incoming data is not spurious and was indeed collected at the right location.

In addition to GIS data creation, editing and deletion, the application also provides advanced GIS functionality such as Split and Merge. Users can select a polygon or line entity and split it into as many smaller polygons/lines as required. The Split Wizard provides a visual workflow and ensures that all resulting data elements have valid and unique IDs within the limits defined by the data model and that no data is lost or data integrity compromised. Similarly, users can also merge several polygons or lines into one. The Merge wizard, too, ensures output data remains valid.

Managing Geographical Areas of operation

Data acquisition activities from the field are carried out within specific geographical boundaries. Such activities or field surveys typically employ multiple field workers.

Revelo provides GIS tools to define the geographical scope of the survey and then divide and distribute that area into sub-areas among the field workers for maximum efficiency and best results. This allows the management more control over such activities and they can now track field progress of individuals in specific areas or in the entire area.

Geographical areas can be fed into Revelo in several ways. Authorized users can upload existing geospatial data (shapefiles) and then select specific polygon features as areas, or they can just draw polygons on the map and save them as areas. Such areas can be modified at any time, as long as the data collection activity is yet to begin.

Maintaining Data Integrity

Revelo also helps maintain integrity of the data by providing a safety net on the Server side, that:

  • Detects duplicates as new data is streaming into from the field
  • Ensures business rules and relations between business concepts remain enforced when modified data comes in

Data Visualization

Revelo provides a dashboard for an overview of the organization’s data and an advanced analytics framework to create various perspectives of the data to provide automatic and time bound answers to critical business questions. This includes time based visualizations of data uploads. This allows the Survey Manager to get a bird's eye view of the state of the Survey and make business decisions in case of Survey progress is not as desired.
